Spending time with people who do not add any value to your life is detrimental. We’ve all been there family, people we’ve known for so long, coworkers, and more can easily consume so much of our time. But I started to notice that I felt extremely drained after spending time with some people. Did they do something wrong? No. Did they mistreat me? No. But I simply didn’t enjoy them and that’s okay. Think of all the things we have to do a daily basis that consume time and energy. After a long week, I just don’t have enough left to given without sacrificing myself. So if I’m going to spend time with someone, it has to be worth it. As an extrovert, it is common that I‘d feel energized after social encounters, but I hadn’t been feeling that way. So I took a step back and reviewed what I was doing in my “free time” and who I was doing it with. Some people, whether intentional or not, just take. They don’t have anything to offer me. Not a laugh, a new perspective, and engaging conversation, nothing. And it becomes exhausting if you feel like you’re doing all of the work to make the time you’re spending enjoyable. So what did I do? I took a step back, I’m not going to spend time with someone just because I feel like I should. I want to spend time with people who uplift me, grow with me, and offer true value.
